Making the decision to get your first horse will take a lot of thought.
The most important, in my mind, is the space needed. One horse will eat down a one-acre pasture if they don’t have any thing else to eat. Ideally it would be best to have a five-acre spot and divide it into two pastures. Then change the horses back and forth as the grass gets thicker and taller. You should feed them grain along with the grass. They will also need hay in the dryer times and all winter.
Second on the list would be time. Horses take a lot of time to groom and keep them healthy. You need to check their feet everyday or so. Brushing and washing will let you know if they have a problem with ticks, flies, and mites or some other bug.

More to think about later.
